In the parable of the house built on the rock and the house built on the sand (Matt. 7:24-27) the Lord assures us that it is all a matter time before we encounter winds and waves bent upon the destruction of our faith. If we build our faith upon things such as the feeling of being saved, or the feeling of the Lord's presence, or the apparent success of self-improvement then we are building upon the wrong foundation. As John Myer, the author of Solid, writes:

"Anyone who wishes to continue following the Lord had better have an indestructible foundation. It should be invulnerable to disappointment, failure, depression, and doubt. Since we often slip into bouts of spiritual laziness, it must be able to suffer neglect. And since some others, including Satan himself, will hate our new faith, this foundation should be capable of withstanding attack. This is not all. From the positive angle, "you are God's building" (1 Cor. 3:9), therefore He wants to do a work of eternal significance in your life. An activity of that caliber needs a permanent foundation, one that is not here today and gone tomorrow…The Lord told us that the "wise man…built his house upon the rock" (Matt. 7:24 NASB). Then, He defined the rock as "these words of mine" (Matt. 7:26 NASB). They are the only indestructible platform on which to plant our feet" (p 9).
